My photography career began in childhood when my father gave me a Kodak Brownie camera. He showed me how to use it, shooting our New York environment and family, and showing me how to develop film in a dark room created in our bathroom. In high school, I became photo editor of the school newspaper (circulation about 10,000 a month!) and I studied photo journalism as well as engineering. My summer jobs were at Knaster - Iceland Studios off 5th Avenue in Manhattan, where I assisted with with Revlon catalogs, ads, and industrial photography. While working at Knaster, I ventured into Life Magazine's studios to pick up info from professionals who appreciated my youthful interest.

Photography continued as an avocation, even while I pursued other interests. In the 1960s, I moved to California and enjoyed a music career. Barbara Mauritz (a singer) and I formed “Lamb.” We made some records. Our manager was Bill Graham, and through him we met Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, and Graham Nash. It was a truly amazing time. I also got into construction and computers (starting with an Apple 2 Plus in 1978).

In the mid-80s, I returned to photography full-time. Over the last 20 years, I have had the pleasure of working with some of the best architects, corporations, and publications in this country. My portfolio pages, and the rich trove of images in the Stock Photo archives, reflect my commitment to excellence, as well as the diverse background that has created Swanson Images.
